The Time Traveler: You Can't Rewrite Time, But You Can Reclaim Your Future is a new play and a project of Re-Entry Theater of Harlem (RTH), exploring the challenges older returning citizens face after lengthy prison sentences. It follows Zack Wilson, a 75-year-old Black man incarcerated at 15, through his first seven days in present-day Harlem as he confronts a lifetime lost and a society that is often unwelcoming. After a discouraging meeting with his parole officer, Zack considers returning to prison, but ultimately finds redemption, community, and purpose. Beginning in November 2026, RTH will spend three months interviewing elderly returning citizens, three months writing the script with input from cast and advisors, and six months on casting, rehearsals, and stage design, with a premiere planned for October 2027. With support from NYC Connect, RTH will hire a director, assistant director, and 20 cast members and invest in art and educational supplies, photo and video equipment, and marketing and branding. Every member of the team is a returning citizen, bringing lived experience to the stage.
